Mousing Around is a readiness activity that helps prepare students for the Headsprout program. Mousing Around not only teaches students how to use a mouse; it also presents basic concepts and instructions that are found in episodes (such as "first," "next," "last," and "not") so that students practice pre-reading and computer skills before learning to read in the program.
Why Use the Readiness Activities
Throughout Headsprout, students will be asked to follow different directions, but familiarizing themselves with the directions beforehand allows students to get more out of the program. Mousing Around lets students practice following Headsprout directions in a non-reading setting before they are asked to follow directions in the program. Once students are familiar with how the program works, they will be better able to focus on learning.

A Spanish language version of Mousing Around is available for Spanish-speaking ESL students. After completing Spanish Mousing Around, students should complete English Mousing Around before starting Episode 1.
How to Use the Readiness Activities
Any student who is set to begin the program at episode 1 will automatically go through Mousing Around first. Mousing Around is just like a regular Headsprout episode. It is important that each student is able to complete Mousing Around independently before beginning episode 1.
If a student starts the program at a later episode but has trouble with mouse skills or with following directions, or if a student needs to go through Mousing Around again, you can assign Mousing Around at any time by creating a Custom Assignment from the Kids A-Z management hub. After completing Mousing Around, the student can go back to where he or she left off in the program.
If a student needs Spanish Mousing Around, you can create a Custom Assignment for it from Kids A-Z as well.
