Why Use Headsprout Early Reading Books
These books help promote a love of reading and reinforce the sounds, words, and skills learned in the episodes. The books are keyed to specific episodes and include only sounds and words that the student is prepared to read at that point in the episodes. The books progress gradually from an early Kindergarten through a mid-second grade level, and feature fiction stories with characters from the episodes, nonfiction passages, and poems.
How to Use Headsprout Early Reading Books
Students read a book online after each episode starting in episode 5. There is no action that teachers need to take at this point: the corresponding book will be presented for the student to read after the student finishes the episode. However, teachers should make sure that students are reading the books out loud and, if needed, are recording themselves and listening to their own reading, or sending the recording to the teacher.
Teachers may also print or project the books for additional practice. This additional practice can take many forms – the suggestions below are just some examples.
Independent Reading
Students can continue to build fluency by re-reading their stories during independent or silent reading periods.
Reading Groups
The books are ideal for classroom reading groups. Students can get valuable experience reading the books to each other, or taking turns while reading from the same book.
Reading in Pairs (with Peers or Older Students)
Many teachers like using peer reading to make sure their students have additional reading opportunities. This is another great opportunity if you have a class of older students who want to assist beginning readers.
At-home Reading
Teachers can send the books home for students to practice and enjoy reading with their families.
