Why Use Group Lessons

In the Headsprout Early Reading online episodes, students learn phonological awareness, phonics, and fluency, and build their reading vocabulary and their comprehension of sentences and stories. The group lessons provide an opportunity for teachers to support and reinforce what students learn in Headsprout, and allow students to apply their beginning reading skills in a group setting.

How to Use Group Lessons

The lessons can be used with the entire class or with small groups of students depending on where different students are in the Headsprout sequence. Wait until all students in the group (whole class or small group) have completed the online episode mentioned in a specific lesson title. For example, once all students in the group have completed Episode 10 they are ready for the lesson titled After Episode 10, and so forth.

The first two pages of the PDF contain the directions and activities for the lesson. The rest of the pages contain student materials which can be printed and distributed to students. There are also projectable materials to help students practice reading aloud in turns or as a group.
