Why do the first 40 Episodes of Headsprout Early Reading have to be completed first?

Knowledge Base Article ID: 95 ( Try another search )

Reading is a complex behavior that involves an intricate set of interlocking skills, sub-skills, and strategies. Children have the easiest time learning to read when all the interlocking skills and strategies are systematically taught and at the ready for when the learners need them. Often students who have difficulty learning to read are missing critical component pieces of the reading repertoire—making it difficult to read effortlessly or to gain meaning from print.

To help ensure your child successfully learns to read, Headsprout makes certain critical early reading skills and sub-skills are in place before moving on to things that build on these skills. While some learners may know some sounds, or perhaps other skills, it is not often the case that many have the mix of skills, strategies, and sounds needed at critical points in the program. We have designed the program such that learners who know a sound or skill will be able to move through those teaching activities very fast. The adaptive and cumulative nature of Episodes 1-40 ensure that learners who need the help or practice get it, and those that can move faster can, with both getting the background needed for the very fast moving Episodes 41-80.

For these reasons, we require the completion of Episodes 1-40 of Headsprout Early Reading before accessing Episodes 41-80. To help make sure your child is the most successful reader possible, we do not provide access to Headsprout Early Reading Episodes 41-80 unless he or she has completed Headsprout Early Reading Episodes 1-40.
