Desktop Icons made with IE7 give an error when you try to open them.

Knowledge Base Article ID: 131 ( Try another search )

Security measures on Internet Explorer 7 have caused the icons that are saved from your account management to not function. The icons are saved but the filename is truncated. Ex. If you save 'teacher.url' to the desktop, the file is saved as 'teacher'.

If you click on the icon, you get the following error:

The target "" of this Internet Shortcut is not valid. Go to the Internet Shortcut property sheet and make sure the target is correct.

There are two fixes for this.

  • Rename the file and add the .url on the end of the filename. 'teacher' >> 'teacher.url' (make sure you have the 'Hide extensions for known file types' unchecked in the 'explorer/tools/folder options/view/Advanced settings' list)
  • Use another browser (Firefox, Opera, IE6, etc.) to save the desktop icon.
We are currently looking for a workaround.
